Here is an interesting medal from 1930 that was issued to commemorate the inaugural flight of New York to Atlanta to Miami passenger air service by Eastern Air Transport, Inc. on December 10, 1930. This medal which measures approximately 3 inches by 4 inches (101mm x 76mm) has a wonderful design showing a textured map of the United States highlighting the route between New York, Atlanta and Miami. The design also features a female figure holding a propeller on the left and Mercury on the right who is sometimes known as the god of travelers. The reverse is blank, but has a wonderful color to it, even some light iridescent toning when tilted into the light. The piece is marked Kilenyi near the lower left, indicating it was designed by famed medallic artist Julio Kilenyi, and was produced by the Whitehead & Hoag Company as marked on the edge of the medal. The condition of the medal is excellent and much better than the average condition these are usually found. The piece is free of major marks, hits or bumps on the edge and has a very even color with minimal spotting and no significant wear. A beautiful example of a well-made early aviation medal. |
