| This is a 1950 Proof Franklin Half Dollar which has been graded PR65 by PCGS and has been encapsulated in an old green-label holder which is over thirty years old. This proof is in exceptional condition for the grade with beautiful luster and nearly mark free surfaces. There are a few minor areas of hazy spotting that are only noticed at certain angles of lighting. More importantly, this coin is encapsulated in a relatively scarce PCGS holder which is referred to as the Generation 3.5 holder, believed by some to have been only produced for a very short time, most likely only during the final week of December 1989. The Generation 3.5 PCGS holder was a transitional variety which followed the two-piece Doily style holder and preceded the one-piece old-green holder. This version 3.5 holder is an older-style two-piece holder with an inner part that is similar to an old rattler style slab which is surrounded by an outer stacking ring. Previous versions of this two-piece holder either had a Doily style label (version 3.0) or a plain green label with a perforated edge (version 2.0). Note that the label of the Generation 3.5 holder here has a smooth edge. The holder itself is in good condition without no breaks and just a few light cracks in the edge of the outer stacking ring, most notably at the upper left corner of the ring. The inner plastic ring of this piece has also transitioned to a vibrant yellow color. A nice first year gem proof Franklin Half Dollar in a somewhat rare transitional PCGS holder. |
