The Wisconsin Territorial Centennial Half Dollar commemorates the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Wisconsin Territory in 1836; Wisconsin did not become a state until 1848. Most feel that the formation of a territorial government was a rather obscure event to commemorate on a nationally distributed coin! This example of the 1936 Wisconsin Territorial Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar has been graded MS67+ by PCGS and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The coin has also been certified by CAC as being solid for the assigned grade. The obverse of the coin is nearly flawless with several die polish lines showing in the fields and only a couple of very tiny marks found under magnification. Please note there are a few scuffs on the PCGS holder that show in the photos, in the center of the obverse design in particular; the marks are certainly not on the coin which has a near flawless obverse. The PCGS holder is also slightly chipped on the stacking ring on the reverse, but the holder is still strong and the coin is fully protected. The reverse of the coin is also nearly free of marks with just a couple of hits on badger noticed under close inspection. The coin is moderately toned on each side with a green and golden color toning which is more focused in the fields at the center of each side. The coin is also very lustrous, especially compared to the typical coin of this issue, and with the toning the coin has decent eye appeal. For reference, the PCGS Price Guide value of this coin is currently $1,750. PCGS graded MS68 examples of this issue are sometimes available, however they have been selling for $5,000 to $6,000 and up in recent years. The present coin, at less than a quarter of that cost is a great overall value. |
