1936 Long Island Half PCGS MS65+ |

This 1936 Long Island Tercentenary Commemorative Half Dollar has been graded MS65+ by PCGS and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The coin has very nice overall eye appeal. The coin exhibits attractive toning on both sides. The obverse is a more subtle color across most of the coin that becomes a vibrant neon green color towards the left side and some purple is added near the top. The reverse has spectacular “tab toning” that features all of the colors of the rainbow and is much brighter and vibrant in hand that the photos provided. As with many commemoratives of the era, the Long Island Tercentenary half dollar was originally issued in a cardboard holder with a circular target-shaped cutout connected by small tabs to hold the coin in place and that type of holder certainly caused the reverse toning pattern of this coin. The coin has decent luster that is slightly muted by the obverse toning, but is stronger on the reverse. Just a few light marks can be found on the coin under a close look, but nothing major or distracting. I would guess that the light marks on the central sails on the reverse and perhaps the slightly muted obverse luster are what kept this coin from earning a higher grade at PCGS. A very beautiful high-grade example of the type. |
