1906 San Francisco Earthquake Medal HK-340A PCGS AU55 |

On April 18, 1906, a very large earthquake and subsequent fire destroyed much of the City of San Francisco. While it is unclear who produced these medals, they were likely made for commercial purposes shortly after the disaster and remain very popular with collectors today. This example of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake & Fire Souvenir Medal was struck in brass and silver plated and is listed as HK-340a in the Hibler-Kappen reference on So-Called Dollars. This 1906 HK-340a medal has been graded AU55 by PCGS and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The piece exhibits the slightest bit of wear on the high points and is an attractive medium-gray to dark-gray color. The detail of the piece is wonderful and there are no major issues of note. A fantastic example of this very popular souvenir medal. |
