The Golden Gate International Exposition was held in San Francisco in 1939 and 1940. Several medals were produced to commemorate this exposition which celebrated the completion of the Golden Gate Bridge. One of the most popular of those medals is the so-called Treasure Island Dollar. The white metal version of the 1939 Treasure Island Dollar is listed as HK-482 in the Hibler-Kappen reference on So-Called Dollars. This example of the 1939 HK-482 medal has been graded MS64 by PCGS and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The obverse features the official emblem of the exposition and the reverse shows a bird’s eye view of Treasure Island, the man made island where the exposition was held. The piece is in excellent condition having nice mint luster and an excellent strike, but just enough hits and marks to keep it from a gem grade. The PCGS holder also has a few light scuffs in the plastic which show in the photos. |
