To celebrate the centennial of the 1848 discovery of gold in California, the California Society of Medalists and the California Chamber of Commerce created a very popular octagonal commemorative medal, reminiscent of the gold slugs from nearly a century prior. The gilt-bronze version of the 1948 California Gold Discovery Centennial Medal is listed as HK-497 in the Hibler-Kappen reference on So-Called Dollars. This example of the 1948 HK-497 medal has been graded MS64 by PCGS. The obverse features a miner panning for gold in a stream and the reverse has a design that is based on the California State Seal. The piece is in excellent condition with a decent strike, nice luster and just a few areas on the obverse rims where the underlying bronze peeks through the gilt finish. A great example of this popular octagonal so-called dollar. |
