It has been the tradition for several centuries for the United Kingdom's monarch to distribute Maundy Money each year to selected elderly. This 1902 Great Britain 1 Pence Maundy has been graded PL67+ by PCGS. The coin is about as perfect and pretty as these coins get. Wonderful original toning on both sides, lots of luster, PL surfaces and virtually unbeatable in every aspect. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of King Edward VII, while the reverse shows the date and denomination topped by a crown. 1902 was the first year the coins featured the portrait of Edward VII. Only 8,976 of these coins were minted in 1902 and it is likely that only a few examples of that original mintage exist in PL67+ condition today. This coin is
one of only two examples graded PL67+ by PCGS with a lone PL68 example grading higher. |
