The 1909/8 $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle is a very popular coin in the series as it is the only overdate in the entire St. Gaudens Double Eagle series. This 1909/8 $20 St. Gaudens Gold Double Eagle has been graded AU58 by PCGS and is encapsulated in the newer-style edge-view holder. The coin is also designated as FS-301 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, though that designation is not listed on the PCGS label, only the 1909/8 is used. The coin has nice original mint luster on both sides that cartwheels around coin. The color is a very even medium gold color with no spotting or major distractions. The overdate on the coin is very bold with a clear 8 underneath the last 9 of 1909 in the date. Just a touch of wear on the leg of Liberty on the obverse and on the eagle’s breast on the reverse prevent a mint state grade and limit the grade to AU58. A beautiful overall example of this popular $20 overdate variety. |
