1923-S Monroe Doctrine Half PCGS MS64 |

The Monroe Doctrine Commemorative Half Dollar has a really unique design, particularly the reverse. The obverse has the heads of James Monroe and John Quincy Adams who were the Presidents in power at the time the Monroe Doctrine was instituted. The reverse features a very interesting image of the Western Hemisphere that is portrayed by two female figures. Surprisingly, the commemorative was issued in conjunction with a major film exposition held in Los Angeles in 1923 which really had nothing to do with the centennial of the Monroe Doctrine. This example of the 1923-S Monroe Doctrine Commemorative Half Dollar has been graded MS64 by PCGS and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The coin is moderately toned with a fairly even and very original looking golden color on the obverse. The reverse is a bit brighter with most of the toning focused around the rims. The coin has average luster for the grade and only a few light marks are noticed under magnification, no major distractions are present. Overall, a nice looking example for the grade. |
