1909-S U.S.-Philippines One Peso PCGS AU58 SOLD
1909-S U.S.-Philippines One Peso PCGS AU58
This coin was minted at the San Francisco Mint for use in the Philippines which were a territory of the United States at the time. Because they were minted for use in a U.S. Territory, minted at the U.S. Mint in the United States and the coins say “United States of America” on them, many U.S. collectors are now starting to collect the U.S. Philippines coinage along with their U.S. coin collections. Even the Red Book of U.S. Coins has expanded their listings of USPI coinage, see pages 415-419 of the 2015 edition (411-415 of the 2014 edition). This is a 1909-S U.S.-Philippines One Peso which has been graded AU58 by PCGS and is encapsulated in one of their newer-style edge-view holders. Please note that the coin fits slightly loose on the inside of the PCGS holder such that the coin can rotate when handled (or when it is sent through the mail). Of course, with some patience, the coin can be rotated back, though a reholdering by PCGS would cure this minor issue. The coin is mostly untoned and shows just a touch of wear on the high points of the design. Minor handling marks can also be found scattered about both sides of the coin, but no major hits or marks are of particular note. The coin has nice overall luster and is certainly a strong example of the type and an overall appealing example of a lightly-circulated U.S.-Philippines Peso.
