1923-S Monroe Doctrine Half PCGS MS65+ |

The Monroe Doctrine Commemorative Half Dollar has a really unique design, particularly the reverse. The obverse has the heads of James Monroe and John Quincy Adams who were the Presidents in power at the time the Monroe Doctrine was instituted. The reverse features a very interesting image of the Western Hemisphere that is portrayed by two female figures. Surprisingly, the commemorative was issued in conjunction with a major film exposition held in Los Angeles in 1923 which really had nothing to do with the centennial of the Monroe Doctrine. This example of the 1923-S Monroe Doctrine Commemorative Half Dollar has been graded MS65+ by PCGS and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The coin has very strong original mint luster on both sides. The coin is lightly toned on both sides with mostly golden, orange and red color but with hints of blue and purple at some areas near the rim. The toning is somewhat speckled and a little uneven, but appears to be original. A great overall gem plus example of this popular early commemorative type. |
