(1900s) Coney Island Dollar HK-717a PCGS MS64 |

Here is an example of the so-called Coney Island Dollar which is listed as HK-717a in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars. This example has been graded MS64 by PCGS and is encapsulated in an extra thick PCGS holder given the thickness of this piece. The medal is made in very high relief and is very bright white and lustrous. The fields on each side are also prooflike which made imaging the piece quite difficult. Once side features Hotel Brighton and the other the Manhattan Hotel. Although undated, some believe the piece was struck in the early 1900s as the appearance is similar to that of some of the medals struck for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Please note the PCGS label incorrectly references the Valley City Diamond Jubilee which is unrelated to this piece. The piece was also professionally imaged by PCGS for their CoinFacts service. A relatively high grade example of the high relief Coney Island Dollar. |
