The 1893 World Columbian Exposition held in Chicago to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World was one of the largest and most popular World’s Fairs in history. Many numismatic items were struck in connection with the Columbian Exposition from the first commemorative coins of the United States to nearly a hundred different so-called dollars. This is the so-called Michigan Dollar from the Columbian Exposition listed as HK-214 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars which has been graded MS62PL by NGC and is encapsulated in one of the newer-style edge-view holders. The medal was made by Childs of Chicago with an obverse featuring the Michigan Building and a reverse listing the names of those on the Michigan World’s Fair Board. This aluminum medal has high relief on the obverse and prooflike fields on both sides. Many small hits and marks show in the prooflike fields as would be expected given the relatively low mint state grade. Nevertheless, a decent example of the Michigan so-called dollar from the Columbian Exposition. |
