The 1893 World Columbian Exposition held in Chicago to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World was one of the largest and most popular World’s Fairs in history. Many numismatic items were struck in connection with the Columbian Exposition from the first commemorative coins of the United States to nearly a hundred different so-called dollars. This is one of the so-called Columbus Bust Dollars from the Columbian Exposition listed as HK-224 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars which has been graded MS62PL by NGC and is encapsulated in one of the newer-style edge-view holders. The obverse is an ultra high relief depiction of Columbus and the reverse has a high relief depiction of the Landing of Columbus. On both sides, a large globe is found in the background of each scene. This medal has a strong strike and flashy prooflike fields. There are several light marks on the high points and in the fields too which are also lightly hairlined. An impressive example of this Columbus Bust Dollar from the Columbian Exposition which has very high relief. |
