The 1893 World Columbian Exposition held in Chicago to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World was one of the largest and most popular World’s Fairs in history. Many numismatic items were struck in connection with the Columbian Exposition from the first commemorative coins of the United States to nearly a hundred different so-called dollars. This is one of the so-called Columbus Bust Dollars from the Columbian Exposition listed as HK-232 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars which has been graded MS62PL by NGC and is encapsulated in one of the newer-style edge-view holders. The obverse is a high relief depiction of Columbus and the reverse has a detailed depiction of Columbus Discovering American in 1492. The medal has strong prooflike fields on both sides with bright white cartwheel luster. There are several small marks in the fields which likely account for the relatively low mint state grade. An impressively mint state example of this detailed Columbus Bust Dollar from the Columbian Exposition. |
