1897 Tennessee Centennial Expo Medal HK-274 NGC MS66 SOLD
1897 Tennessee Centennial Expo Medal HK-274 NGC MS66
The 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition Official Medal was produced for the 1897 fair in Nashville where the centennial of the Tennessee Statehood was celebrated. These official souvenir medals were designed by Charles Barber, struck in brass by the United States Mint at their exhibit on the fairgrounds and sold to attendees for 25 cents each. This 1897 Tennessee Centennial Official Medal is listed as HK-274 in the Hibler-Kappen reference on So-Called Dollars. This example of the 1897 HK-274 Official Medal has been graded MS66 by NGC and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. This is a very clean piece with no marks, hits or spots of note. The luster is excellent and the fields are even slightly prooflike. The only thing potentially keeping the piece from an even higher grade is a slight haziness on both sides; otherwise, this is about as perfect as you will likely ever see on one of these medals. This piece is one of only three (3) examples of the HK-274 to have been graded MS66 by NGC with no examples having been graded finer. An excellent top pop example of this so-called dollar struck by the United States Mint.
