This 1904 Louisiana Purchase Expo Gold Half Dollar has been graded MS64PL by NGC and is encapsulated in the newer-style edge-view holder. The token is cataloged as H-61-330 in the Hendershott reference on memorabilia from the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The very small and very thin gold token is fully proof-like on both sides with deeply mirrored fields and frosty devices. The fields of the coin are filled with many die polish lines that show in the photos and which are completely original to the coin. The “Z” at the base for the fleur-de-lis obverse design is the initial of Farran Zerbe who privately minted and marketed these pieces at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Zerbe, who would later serve as President of the American Numismatic Association, was also in charge of distributing the classic gold dollar commemoratives struck by the U.S. Mint in connection with the Expo. A wonderful proof-like example of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair gold half dollar. |
