(1890s) Whipple Dollar HK-832 ANACS MS63 SOLD
(1890s) Whipple Dollar HK-832 ANACS MS63
The So-Called Whipple Dollars are very popular not only amongst collectors of so-called dollars, but also amongst collectors of Morgan Silver Dollars as well because of the design similarities. It is unclear when exactly these pieces were struck, as they are undated, but since they use the Morgan Dollar reverse design, they must have been produced during or after 1878. Many experts believe the Whipple Dollars were advertising pieces made sometime in the 1890s. Others believe the Whipple Dollars were unfinished pieces that may have never been publicly issued because of a quick prohibition by the Government due to their use of “Legal Tender” and “One Dollar” in the design. This example of the Whipple Dollar was struck in gilt-bronze and is listed as HK-832 in the Hibler-Kappen reference on So-Called Dollars. This HK-832 Whipple Dollar has been graded MS63 by ANACS. The piece is bright golden with lots of luster. Just a few light marks and some light haziness likely keep the piece from a higher grade. A nice example of this popular So-Called Dollar.
